So after 3 weeks without a carputer...

So a couple weeks ago, I hit a nasty pothole and my carputer shut off. My SDC automatically tried booting it again, it got past POST and into loading windows, and then shut off abruptly again. From then on it wouldn't give me a single sign of life.

So, I presumed something had died on me. A week or so ago, I tried it again and although it had some issues, it booted up. However, the remote wasn't working, and I really didn't have time to fix it... and the system is pretty much unusable when driving without the remote to control the music, so I continued to live without it, even over a couple 3-hour trips without music.

Finally, this past weekend I started tinkering with it again. I took out the IR reciever board, and hooked it up to the programmer, and it verified that the code that was on the chip did indeed match the firmware code. Still didn't work though. So I re-programmed the firmware (exactly what was already on it) and suddenly it worked.

Put stuff back in the car, and booted the computer. Remote worked, everything was great. Went to plug in my new BU-303 GPS reciever, and in the process of grabbing the USB hub (which was tangled in the mess of wires at the back of the computer) the computer abruptly shut off as it had a couple weeks ago. I checked the voltage output of the DC-DC... 12v, just fine. So I shut everything off, wiggled all the connectors, made sure everything was plugged in snugly and correctly, and turned it back on and it's been OK since. I think I need to get some of those nice POWERWERX connectors and ditch the crappy molex.

Anyway, I just wanted to share my little story with anyone who cares... it's nice having music and GPS again... and I even got around to extending the wire for the shutdown delay button to my SDC, so now I can leave the comp running for half an hour when I go into a store, which was verified this morning when I went to staples to take advantage of their insane $4.95 linksys 802.11B PCMCIA card sale... (too bad they were sold out of the $9.95 wireless routers...)

    hooray for finicky carputers
But don't take it from me! here's a quote from a real, live newbie:

It sucks to be without your car PC. I've gotten so used to it, I get really antsy if it's not working. Luckily, I've not had that happen too many times!
