Question Advice From Those In The Know

    Hey all,
I have been watching and reading for a few months now and its about time i asked one or two questions of my own.

I am looking at setting up a Carputer in a 95' Honda Legend.
The dash on this puppy fits a 7" screen with ease and no changes to the trim or anything (so i have read).
However i am not sure if i should put a head unit in as well as the touch screen.
I wanted all my systems controlled by the touch screen. (Dvd, Music, Music Video, GPS, Mobile Phone).
But i am thinking along the lines of audio quality with regards to putting in the head unit. (Putting in a head unit would mean i need to rip apart the nice wood dash {something i didn't want to do in case i decide to sell later on}).

I was thinking that perhaps a sound card with optical out and an amp with optical in would give me awesome sound quality. (Has anyone done this before? {Before you say it, i have done many searches!})
Note, i also want the ability to put two xboxes in later on down the track and feed this into the sound system. (Yes two, one for each screen on each head rest - Total 3 Screens in the end - {We can dream a dream}).

    Thanks in advance.

    -Alex

creative audigy2nx is pretty good already without an external digital processor, but if you want to connect it to a processor, alpine pxa-h700.

Basically the only popular reason I have seen to keep the HU is for the FM/AM tuner. While PC tuners are available their quality is basically hit or miss.

Don't forget alternatives for mounting the HU. People have mounted them in the glovebox temporarily, or even the sun visor. Some even just stick it in the trunk, if you have a remote for it that might work (or figured out how to control it via the carPC). This way you could get quality FM/AM tunes without ripping apart your dash to mount it in there.

Another thing you may have hinted at, one reason to keep your HU is if it has line ins you can skip the need for an amplifier setup. If you don't want to put any money into your sound system and you dont already have an amplifier setup then the HU with inputs may be your only option. If it doesnt have the inputs I think I saw a thread somewhere for hacking some inputs in, just try a search.

    HU +'s

    Proper FM
Sound when the carputer needs fix'in and tweak'in
More control with sound shapeing, delays and possibly X-overs depending on deck
Aux, HD Radio, Sirius and XM depending on deck, although you can hook some of these to your carputer.
RCA's capable of 5-10v if your amps can handle it depending on deck
more buttons to push! and more lights!

I am about 80% complete setting mine up, I took out the head unit all together, just computer -> rca outs -> amps

    Sounds great

There is nothing wrong with FM tuner cards, you can get very nice sound quality from one.

eclipse and alpine are about on par - both have some very nice components on the high end of things...

however, eclipse has turned down in the last years ever so slightly in terms of quality...but for most people it's still perfectly great equipment

Talking Wow! You guys are to cool!

Thanks for the fast replies and direct answers!
Got to love a forum where u don't get blasted when you ask something!

I have been thinking about it more and more, and the radio isn't the biggest part of my life (i mean i have over 60 gigs of mp3's!) hehe!
So i will prob just go with a screen, and no head unit. I can always change it if i don't like it and add one with little effort.

Thanks for the idea about putting it in the boot or somewhere else like that dude, didn't even think of that!

Going away for 2 weeks, so i wont be able to start work on it for a few weeks.
But let me post it right here, right now!
I am going to make it my little project and i will be putting lots and lots of info about what i did and how i did it, no doubt you will all see your name on the credit list!

Oh, i did have one more question!

    Before i forget, i have a lot of dvd's.
And i was thinking of ripping them down to Divx or some sort of avi.
I will be running a 7" screen like i said before.
Any ideas about resolution and the like for the best quality/size ( i wanted to get under a gig per movie. prob around 700-800 mb, so i can have lots on there ).

    Cheers again
    -Alex

Ummmmm, not sure about that one. I have always done full quality rips onto DVDs, but I used DVDShrink which is excellent. Not sure it will rip down to AVIs but it does compress DVDs. Try a search on google for like ripping dvd to avi or something, should get plenty of results.
