building a bike-computer

So I've had this urge to install gps on my bike but i'd like some input during the initial stages of planning.

First off i want this to be simple:
-it has to be audible
-no touchscreen
-visual turn signals via leds (possibly mounted on the side mirrors or in the stock instrument cluster)
-possibly a character lcd to help with the input of data
-extreamly small

I know navi-voice will be the center of the project but i dont know about what front end would be best. Also, what about hardware? mini-itx may be to large, not sure about the nano boards though. How about some of those palm pc's? but this will probably give us problems with the character lcd output.

second... would it be possible to have some of the current navigation front ends send signals to a relay board to turn on the led to signal the upcoming turn? ( i was thinking about 3 leds on each side... three 'on' for 500m, two 'on' for 200m, and one lit for 'turn now')

would anyone like to brain storm or help out on this project? or am i just crazy?

thanks for the links, i checked those out when i was searching. they aren't exactly what i had in mind. they are centered around a lcd screen while i want one that is pretty stealth.

stealth?? as in not seen or removable when parked???

an ipaq could do what you want.... desinator3 has voice prompt can be set to show arrows as well for a quick glance while riding... and with a touch screen you can prog your destination easly while sitting on the bike...

with your original idea you would have to prog something yourself to drive the leds.
and how would you set your destination into the gps ??? what input method would you use??? a pda with either cf or sdio gps card would work fine even a bluetooth so you could permanently mount the gps unit.
with an pda and some form of earphone you could get audible directions and still wear it on your belt!!
