NCT (National Car Test) Ireland and Carputers

    Hi,

Well i failed my NCT Yesterday, €50 wasted, and why, because i have a carputer, anyone who runs there cables through the carpets, i had the cable for my LinITX Screen and USB Hub Comming out there as screen is mounted to the Bottom of the dash AND THE BASTARDS FAILED ME, all because "There not Automotive Cables", whats the hell is an automotive cable, ok power cables, speaker cable, yes we have all seen the automotive versions ie expensive ones but ive never heard of a automotive version of a usb cable, Tosser, wouldnt listen and when i tried to explain he wouldnt listen, i love my carputer but now i have to rip the entire thing out or hide the cable under the carpet just to pass it.

Any one else had issues with there NCT/MOTS.

I've not had any MOT problems with mine. If it's not an automotive cable it's none of his business so long as it's not "part of the car".

Sound like he was talking bollocks to me though... As surely they would have to fail people with hands free kits, wires for Tom Tom Go navigation things... anything really.

Hide the cable - it's the easy option. And take it to somewhere decent next time!

National Car Tax - Oh i mean Test

There resoning in the NCT Test Centres is that if it goes under the carpet its part of the car. He also failed me on my cable from the igition to my Opus, NCT are specifc centres and you have to bring it back to the NCT Centre when you had the initial test caried out, You cant bring it to a local garage or anything, there specific centre for only the NCT, not a garage of any sort, not even a dealer can NCT a car. Could try hide it under the carpet but he would probally fail me on having something under there, a friend of mine was failed because where the full name of the county his car was from was wrote in italics as apposed to bold, Q 30eur retest and New Plates.

Nothing in the checklist. Have a look in the Road Traffic Act or Statutory Instruments to see if there is any mention of auxillary wiring. Seems they've gone over the top on you. If they're wrong get your money back plus compensation!

I'll keep looking for more info when I get some time tonight.

Ok, I found something of interest. Have a look at this pdf document page 76 of 87. There is some stuff on wiring. I haven't read it fully but this looks like a good place to start.

From what I could see, unless you are using crap household wire you should be okay with what you have. I'd really push the point with the tester armed with a hard copy of the document. You could always ram it up his arse if all else fails

perhaps if you put an automotive (30A) relay on your acc line and run the opus trigger from that, thats a more 'proper' way to run things because the acc line isnt really supposed to be used for more than mA drawing devices (yes I know some acc lines may have up to 10A available but we are talking 'the way it used to be done' here )

As for backward, well Psychobiker i can see your school system has taught your the finer points of the English language, never mind your AMAZING ability to make a relivant and coherant point, really doing them pround, now off you go before i turn on a light and you find yourself unable to leave.

Everyone else thanks for the help with this, made my point and showing no current was passing through, it was allowed. Phog mo thoin Psychobiker, Dead indeed.
