    My progress

I finally took some pics of my progress and I'm hoping to finish and install everything this weekend. I'm working on the front bezel and just need to do a little more bondo, sand it down nice and apply the burlwood vinyl so it matches my trim. This is for a '98 Outback Limited.

    Some specs:
VIA EPIA MII 10000 ITX motherboard (1ghz)
    512mb PC2100
60gb Hitachi 7200rpm laptop hard drive
Slot load laptop DVD combo drive
    Xenarc 7" wide touchscreen LCD
    BU303 GPS satellite receiver
    Netgear WG511
    bluetooth adapter
    Opus 90W power supply
    Palmone Treo 600 usb connector
    Playstation2 USB mini keyboard
Cheap *** 4ch amp to power speakers

screen, hard drive, case put together, gps

my treo, screen, keyboard, hard drive

case opened up, that's the EPIA, WG511, bluetooth, and the Opus on the right

    DVD combo drive

my awesome handywork on the bezel so far

    More info:
Bezel is highly modified original w/ bondo and the Xenarc chasis. Burlwood vinyl finish will be applied to match trim.
Case is original double din stereo case gutted and modified.
Runs WinXP with Frodoplayer frontend for DVD, MP3s, music videos, other videos, CDs, iGuidance 2.1 for GPS, PDAnet for internet over my celly, and all the normal Win apps.

    Some future plans:
    XM radio
    TV tuner
good roof mounted antenna for wifi as well as GPS

Well, I didn't quite get to the install today, but I did finish the bezel and it looks pretty good. Not exceptional, but pretty damn good. So here are the money shots. I'll do the install and take pictures of that tomorrow hopefully.

I also must say, the burlwood vinyl that I got off ebay is very easy to use and conforms quite nicely with very little effort at all. If you have burlwood trim in your car or would like it, it's very simple. I used a clear coat covering to make sure it was damage resistant. That was probably the hardest part of applying it.

Well, so much for posting soon...anyway, I finally got around to taking some pictures of the complete (well, almost) setup. I need to figure out something to do w/ the DVD-ROM still as it's pretty ugly for now. I glued it together to cover up the ugly screws and such and now can't figure out what to do to make it pretty. I also bought a 10' USB extension cable which was the perfect length to have my GPS outside just infront of the hatch. I coated all the seems inside and out w/ the rubbery apoxy, so it should be waterproof. I also made my own Brightlife2 skin for Frodoplayer and CarWeb.

    Finished (sort of):

You just have to tell me how you got that wooden finish.

Thanks! Did you say you had to spray cover it with something?

I used a clear coat to make it more resiliant. It's probably not necessary, but it gives me peace of mind.
