Do you have anything in the running? It seems like something you'd be into.
This year looks to be pretty promising, but I thought that last year too.
Anyone heading out to check this out? Definetly the most computer processing power in an off-road vehicle. See $2M of our hard earned tax dollars up for grab.
Qualifications start tomorrow in Pomona for 1 week, I may go check it out this weekend. The actual event is at Oct 8th (at 06:00) in Primm (Start & Finish). I'll be there for sure, heckling everyone (except the military dudes).
I was out there last time, I thought for sure one of the vehicles was going to take out the "news & media" swarm behind the K-rail. Maybe this year they will up the throttle gains...

I wish I could go check it out, but I'm a bit far... Post pictures! (assuming they allow non-media types to take them.) Media pictures are often lame and don't capture the full environment.
My company is sponsoring an entry. Here's a pic:
and here's a link to a video they made of it earlier this summer: realplayer or mpg 84 mb!
They've been desert testing it lately and it's doing well. I've seen it running and it's pretty cool but robotics has a LONG way to go before autonomous driving becomes commonplace.

I will be going on the race day with some of my coworkers doing media coverage for Toms Hardware.com...
We are all making bets on who will win, we think Carnegie mellon will finish the race...
1990 Jeep Cherokee
2000 VW Golf TDI 4dr
2005 VW GTI MKIV - SOLD
I think they'll get the furthest, but won't finish. Damn Murphey and all that.
yea, I aggree, its not any where close to easy especially with the state of technology, too many sub-systems to deal with as well as software, even if it was a 4m grand prize. will be better than last year though. I wish industry robotics leaders like honda or so entered though.
It's almost exclusively a sensor and software issue. As we all know, the computer hardware can be found and installed with ease but getting software and sensors to distinguish between a tumbleweed and a rock is really difficult. So many different situations can come up that you just can't code for them all.
Need an order of magnitude gain in the AI arena.

All you need is a front mounted flame thrower and a check to see if it burns or not..Originally Posted by Bugbyte

Yea, I started off 2 years ago on a team (I still claim to be a founding team-member) but didn't have time and it was a bit far from where I live. Team Terrahawk was basically started by fellow BattleBot & Robot Wars guys, they are now sponsored by Northrup (one of them is an employee there). My work is very intense, keeps me busy for 50 hrs/ week minumum, has peaked at over 100 a few times, so I had to stop that.Originally Posted by judoGTI
But they built a pretty cool 6 wheel drive, diesel electric robot from the ground up. Only 20 teams can make it to the desert, so I'll be rooting for them.
On a smaller scale, the guys at Seattle Robotics have been doing a competition called Robo Magellen, same concept, but on a ~1/8 scale.
