My heatsink fell off in the middle of a trip

Ok so heres what my weekend consisted of
    1) got some 8 ga wire
    2) terminal rings
    3)girlfriends car
    4) inverter
    5) my carpc

so i had a long trip 900 or so miles round trip and wasnt taking my vehicle but rather my girlfriends car so i decided to do a temporary install in my gf's car
i ran 8ga wire to the front of the car and stuffed it in between the door jam and tucked the wires behind the plastic moldings and under the seat
and viola i had a "to go" system up and running in like 30 mins
i just held the ts in my hand and set it down occasionally by the shifter during the trip
i had the case in the back seat behind the drivers seat. and my girlfriends best friend decides to take a nap
she falls asleep and covers the psu's fan outlet and halfway thru the trip the pc shuts off and quite obviosly overheated
i shut everything down and let it sit for a few mins start it back up and it still wont go
so i open the case air it out a bit and stick it in front of the ac duct just then i look at the heatsink fan and notice ITS hanging OFF! i was like wtf how did this happen i tried to fix it and re mount it and was able to but i was shocked
it had happened we werent on rough roads or anything.
fortunately for me it was an amd mobile so i think that was my saving grace
before i had installed it in the car i realized afterwards that the temps while bench testing were in the 55C range and after i reapplied the heatsink the temps were around 35C no higher . so basically this thing ran with no heatsink for 5 hours plus some on the trip then has a overheat and i was able to get it up and running again WOW i just got lucky i guess

whats the max temps some of you have seen on the mobile 35 or 45w chips

I was actually doing some investigating into this yesterday, since I'm going to be using a low-profile heatsink that is designed for a 1U server.
I saw overclockers that are running the 35w XP Mobile overclocked to insane levels that run daily between 45-50 degrees Celsius (113 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit).
After your little adventure, I'd clean the CPU and heatsink, apply some good thermal grease and make sure that sum***** is mounted securely.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

    damn 5 hours no heatsink?

crazy, glad it did not cook.

I highest temps i have seen personally when i was clocking the **** out of it were in the mid 50's under load. I am sure it can go higher then that.

@Darque - The chip is an insane overclocker, I have mine running 800 mhz over on air barely breaking a sweat. And that was just toying to see what it could do, for my car setup i run it at stock speeds. It ran faster then the venice in my desktop which has all high end components (zalman, neo4 platnium, high end corsiar, 6600gt, ect)

I prefer mine not to go over 50c, but most don't start encountering errors until they get closer to 65c.

Heh might be going astray, but Intel chips run hot as hell. When I bought my P4 precott 530J, With the stock heat sink and some off brand thremal paste, I was running about 52-55C Idle and up to 70 Under Load. I'm now down to 35C and 50C load...

intel P4's run hot as hell.... intel pentium m's however are like the athalon xp-m.... very efficient & run pretty cool... the 2mb l2 cache & 400-533 bus speeds don't hurt either...... intels P4 is like cadillacs 4100.... a bomb from the beginning... amazing how popular they are considering how crappy & inefficient they are...
