Just though I'd share this out.

I found a great deal on hookedontronics for the 690XV 2-Way alarm $150.

This is not a remote start system....but is a 2-way security system.

Well, first off I would like to agree with you that is a good price standalone. However, if you want to get it professionally installed most places around here (Missouri) charge you an arm and leg to get it professionally installed if you did not buy the alarm from them. Maybe it's not like that everywhere, or maybe you plan to install it yourself. In which case, this will have no effect on you at all.

The second point is that I personally despise viper security systems (or at least the past ones I've seen). I haven't actually used any of the new ones, however, the old ones range was terrible. I mean, you would literally have to be 20 feet away to start the car or get any readouts about the security status. I thought this personally was terrible, as there would not really be a point to have the status indicator if you were greater than 20 feet away.

I personally do enjoy the range of the clifford alarm systems. Might want to check them out for future purchases.

All in all though, great price listed for the product, however, the models I've seen by viper are subpar.

i've read that the alarm brains are identical....however i cant find if viper systems support cliffnet.

i def plan on installing it myself. I installed my old alarm.....disconnected it ($20 alarm from ebay....and haven been planning on installing a better alarm....now I have my chance). I figured a place like this is full of DIYers and most people here probably would'nt dish out $800 to get this installed at some shop

If you plan on installing it yourself as you said then it is a good deal. I heard with cliffords you can only get them installed at the places you buy them from, so you can't just order the system online. Not sure if that is true as I havent' asked my friend what he did to get his installed. I have one friend with a clifford, one with a viper (2003 is when he bought it the top of the line for that year which i have no idea what model it was). But a side by side comparison showed the range difference was huge. As I said, I can't speak for newer viper alarm systems as i know nothing of them. But from the past, I thought the range on the vipers were too limited for my liking.

well, i installed my alarm, I am extremely happy with the range. I can pick up signal form my car all over my college campus (small college, 2300 students). We have 4 different main buildings on our main campus, and I can recieve signal inside of each one of them even with my car in the back of the parking lot. I can only transmit back to the car when I'm in the 2 closer buildings, which even then is amazing.

It doesnt make any sense that you would only be able to get an alarm installed at a dealer. If you want it to be under warrenty, then yes, authorized dealers...this makes sense. But possible to install by yourself, definatly. A lot of the newer clifford alarms are just rebranded DEI alarms, and are identical to the viper and pythons. If you want, you can use a bitwriter to configure the alarm, which can run you about $100, but this is not needed. With the older cliffords, you need a cliffnet cable, which you can get for under $30, and the standard customer version of the software is free. The pro software is a little pricey..up to $150....but I've seen it much lower....even free....

Point of reference, since about a year or two ago, Clifford = Directed Electronics = Viper. Same stuff now.

The 690xv/790xv series is a lot better than their old stuff, for sure. Range is much improved, and reliability is great. I've had my 790 for nearly 2 years with no issues.

Also, any DEI alarm that's supposed to be professionally installed and sold will not be covered by warranty unless it's purchased AND installed at a store that is an official DEI dealer, and not all dealers are 'official' for all DEI product lines..

That price is a pretty good deal on that alarm, though I managed to find someone on eBay last year selling 790xv (same, but with remote start) for around $130.

As far as the post referring to professional install, typically for a 690xv you'd be looking at around $100-$150 depending on where you go.

damn, i wish i woulda found the 790 for $130. At least hookedontronics is reputatble though. Anyway, I've the viper 5000 installed at drdetail for $399.....which is insainly good. But the 690 has everything I need and for this price, its hard to beat. Also...i'm not looking for warrenty I guess when it comes to an alarm. I'm looking for the heads up, so I can run out there and serve my own kind of justice
