Just connect the +12V IGN on the +12V cable... then you can use the computer all the time, no matter if the key is in or out...
But, you'll need a switch for on/off turning..
I was just sitting here wondering how long the typical carpc should be able to run in "key off" mode. Meaning engine off, amps off, so just the pc running. I have an old EPIA 800 (not M800) with an older MPEGBOX dc-dc power supply. I will only have an addon usb card in it and my 250GB HD. The reason I ask this is because I would like to be able to leave the carpc on like when I get out to go to the grocery store, fillup with gas, or when I need to update it via wireless at home. I know that if I install a tank circuit (extra battery) that will help but this is in my 91 MR2 Turbo and weight is not a welcome addition. If anyone has any pointers please let me know.
Thanks.

xander, that's really not what he was asking
The amount of time the carputer can run for with the engine off is different for every car, both because every battery is different, and because every engine is going to need a different amount of power to start again. It sounds to me like something you should just test out in your driveway or something, where you have someone to jump-start you if you run it down too much.
But don't take it from me! here's a quote from a real, live newbie:
