    Hard Drive Mounting Question

Can the laptop 2.5" hard drives, commonly used in CarPC applications, be mounted in a position other than horizontal and still function properly? In othe words, will mounting the hard drive in a non-horizontal position (vertical for example) reduce the life of the hard drive?

I dont think so. People have mounted their drives vertically, specifically to stop the patters from being scratched when they hit bumps.

Actually, the 2.5 hdd's, as well as all hdds are designed to operate regardless of mounting position. However the platters will take more stress if mounted vertically (in a mobile application), as gravity has its tolls. But note that when you pick a laptop up and move it in any direction it doesnt stop working. . . the same is for a desktop machine. So . . . if you want to mount vertically, you probably will be ok, but realize that bumps will effect the drive differently with a vertical mount. I work on military applications, conditioning COTS equipment for ruggedized environments, and used a similar drive setup. So I am sure it works.

Thanks. I figured as much. I may have to re-think my mounting options for my project. But it is good to know that it will work if I have to mount the hardware vertically.

We have no evidence that horizontal vs vertical makes any differance in cars.

Mount it firmly to the car in the orientation that works for your install.

I woulnd't do that.... mount your drive with the disk in the same orienration of the wheels, this will prevent headcrushing

Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Interesting, what version of fictional physics do you belive in?

We have had a Drive tech comment on the internal physics of hard drives. He said something to the effect of, the layer of air cushions the head from contacting the platters while the drive is spinning.

I just have to belive him, not you.

I have had a 2.5 drive in my dash, mounted upside down, flat, with the heads toward the left...for about 4 years now...same drive...
