freedrive or mapmonkey, but keep a watch on bagnav

all are based on destinator, who originally seemed to encourage their development.

You will need to BUY a copy of the destinator software to get the maps, so buy the latest version.

I think some ppl have managed to use torrent sites etc or even made friends with the donkey.

None of which have worked for me.

If you find someone selling an old disk, you will have (like me) a problem that roundabouts are not voice prompted correctly, ie the third exit would be ''go right, then right, then left'' which is annoying.

i had a look at autoroute however it doesnt voice prompt and i cant keep looking at screen and potentially missing a direction so i went out and bought a copy of infomap navigator, currently busy trying to fix things with computer so not had proper chance to test it although initial impression is it is a good piece of software and like said it has a carpc interface

It does here's a snippet from the help file

"Work with the Driving Guidance pane

In addition to providing voice instructions, the Driving Guidance feature displays text instructions in large print below the map to help you follow your route. Arrow icons indicate the direction of the next turn and a progress bar shows approximately how much of the current instruction you have completed. The color of the progress bar changes to match the route segment you are currently driving. These text instructions are displayed whether you have voice instructions turned on or off. You can repeat instructions and turn voice instructions on or off by using options in the GPS pane or keyboard shortcuts."

Took me a while to find that but its all there in the official product.
