File Transfer Laptop-to-PC while Laptop is off???

Hey all. I've tried to this to no avail. Is there anyway to transfer my files from my laptop to my PC without the laptop being on using a cable or otherwise? The problem is, I need those files ASAP because they're my source of extra income (I make music and sell music) but the laptop's battery is dead and the 12V supply won't charge it. I've already sent the laptop back for this same problem about 2 months ago (still under warranty) and it took me a month to get the dang thing back from Gateway. I can't afford to lose another month of work with my deadlines approaching. I know CompUSA and Best Buy do it, but there's no CompUSA within a 200 mile radius and I don't trust Best Buy (I used to work there).

I knew I should've invested in an external hdd.

Pull the hard drive out of the laptop and put it into a 2.5 hd drive enclosure. The just plug it into your computer and you can get your files.

Sorry. . IIRC, I remember glancing at a product when I was at Best Buy that had a cable (forgot what kind, serial maybe?) that plugs into both computers. I could be completely wrong with that information but that's what I remember. And no, I haven't set up the home network yet. Just my luck I guess.

Thanks a lot...I dunno how the heck I didn't think about that. I'm headed up to Montreal this weekend hopefully (I'm 2 hours away ), so if the weather's good, I should have this cleared up by Monday.

I want to know how the guy is going to transfer files to a USB thumb drive or across a network while the laptop is off... As in no power...

All those who are offering up these grand ideas, please think through the answers you provide before you provide them.

Your best bet, as suggested, is to pull the HDD out of the laptop, use the appropriate adapter, and install the HDD as a slave in your desktop PC, copy the files off and you're good to go.
As an additional step, I'd also recommend backing them up to CD or DVD for safekeeping.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

Buy a spare battery so this doesn't happen again. ...or if you have the spare funds, buy a new laptop and ditch that one once you get it fixed.
