I don't know of a program that will randomly sync over a certain amount of files/songs, but you may just want to look into putting together an external usb HD. Just go online and get a small 2.5" 40 or 60GB HD or something and an external case.
Did they replace that with synchronizing? I use synchronizing between my laptop and desktop to keep all my pictures... there is about 2 gigs of them... it can take up to 1 or 2 minutes to synch them if nothing has changed, but you would only have to do it every once in a while.Originally Posted by DarquePervert

microsoft sync toy is a nice syncing app, lost of features, can be run with command line, and configured for autoplay (using tweakUI) or windows scheduler.

Would need a little customization for random,
wmp10 integrated sync works well with USB thumb drives, and using smartplaylist can randomize. not sure if it will work with a mounted network drive (laptop-desktop), if not probably a way to fool wmp10 sync that a network drive is a removable usb drive.
Was also going to mention WMP 10. Currently use it to auto sync audio files over to a 1GB CF card for my pocketpc. Just played with it a little and couldn't get it to recognize my external USB hard drive as a "device" to sync with so not sure if it'd work with a mapped network drive or not. I notice on mine it does recognize my dvd drive as well as a virtual dvd drive (for mounting ISOs) on my laptop as devices that it can use so maybe he could make use of those --> On desktop sync to a CD-RW or DVD-RW and then use any regular sync program on laptop to transfer from the CD/DVD to it's HD.
I also use Synctoy a lot and love it. Could use that to transfer files from the burned CD/DVD to the laptop.

why don't you hook up a exerrnal 60 gb hd and use WMP 10 to sink it as a "media device" from a maped drive to your desktop. Then you could have either all of your music, or what ever folders you want sync-ed.
I don't think it willl recognize an external HD as "media device"..... at least on mine it worn't work that way.
