dumpster diving / recycling / how to get stuff for free

Well, i went out today to look for spare parts for putting together my hardware... I needed motherboard risers, and front_panel headers / leds. None of the hardware stores had any of these and i was not in the mood to start building them from scratch.

I checked at local repair shops and they didnt sell those front panel headers. They kept saying if you buy a case, it will come with it... But thats just the thing, I wont be using a commercial case.

So I aksed if they had some wasted cases and indeed they did... but they already threw them away.

Frustrated wasting 4 hours driving here and there, I asked them if they would mind me searching through their discarded units in the back of the store. with slight hesitation, they agreed. ^_^

Within the clean (non restaurant dumpster) I was amazed at what
    I dug up.
    • 4 beige ugly cases.
    • 4 power supplies ranging from 150 to 250 watts
    • tons of motherboard risers with paper washers and screws
    • FRONT PANEL HEADERS and LED's !! lots of them.
    • Power switches
    • Front panel components (usb ports & bay covers)
    • reset switches
    • IDE cables.
    • Floppy drives and cables
    • CDrom drives (and some old 10x burners)
    • 2-4 gb drives (perfect for linux)
    • Soundblaster 16. (wow havent seen one of those in a while)
    • dial up modems

thats about it. Out of curiousity i tested some of these and they work! they actually work! I only kept what i needed and threw the rest away.

I found a 1000va APC battery backup in a Staples dumpster. In the box. Brand new. Working perfectly.

Not to mention the 10 desk chairs I've pulled out.. and a partially working laptop that I parted on eBay.

I've seen people that couldn't afford to eat, go into a 7-11, grab a sub (sandwich) and a small carton of milk, throw it in the garbage and wait till the trash is taken out, then go and get it...

When my friend and I were 16, we were putsing around the post office garbage cans and found a box of empty liquor bottles, only two of them were still sealed. PARTY!

A trick that some employees use to steal stuff from the store is to put brand new stuff that they want in the rubbish, then make sure they are taking the rubbish out.

They then come back (or get their friends to) after the store is closed.

That's probably what happened with the UPS
