    Question first timer

    hi,
i'm starting to collect all the bits needed and have done a fair bit of research into this subject but was still wondering what the major pittfalls are when starting to build your own mp3car system
    thanks in advance

    Re: first timer

has been covered, but im in a nice mood.... okay I would say the main points are....

    • How to power the system? Either DC-DC or an inverter ---> PSU. The latter is easier to build, but the former will/can be more effiecient. A DC-DC can also be pre-built (keypower etc) at a high cost, or built yourself (sproggy, etc) which means you need the know-how to do such a thing. Powering will be the bigger hurdles you need to decide on.
    • Ground loops/buzzing. If you dont ground your components properly you will end up with buzzing in the output sound. This is one area alot of people dont take the time to do at the start, and then tear their hair out trying to fix it!
    • How to run the output sound? Either Head Unit with AUX input/ direct car amp input (if you run amps) modification of an existing head unit, FM modulator input, tape adaptor are the main methods. The first three are most likely the best solutions, but can be a pitfall.
    • Buliding the case. Make it strong (its in a car!) and able to fit all components. Also be consious of possible heat problems and mounting of hard disc drives to aviod excissive shock/damage.
    • Fuse, Fuse, Fuse.. You must fuse the system in your car..... trust me on that one!

    thats enuff from me...

    my thoughts:

FIRST OF ALL....dont be afraid to ask questions, but also READ the old posts, many times anything you ask is going to be in an old post... dont look once and give up. actually do research, that is the only way you are going to learn all this stuff!!

have a specific plan on what you are going to build...i know when i started all i said was "i want an mp3 player in my car, with a small lcd screen". i had no clue what else i wanted and i hurt most of what i was trying to do. make a detailed sheet of what you want to put in your system...

look at a normal computer and figure out what you will need for the entire other computer you are going to build for your car. again... make a list of all that you need and when you figure out what you want for your video card, sound card, motherboard...etc, write it down.

keep track of your costs, money will fly out of your pocket if you are not careful.

figure out the interface... VERY IMPORTANT. do you want an lcd screen, a character display, voice activation, touchpad mouse, touchscreen. i've had 3 ways of doing my system so far and i havent even finished yet.

dont rely on scavenged parts... old parts break faster than new parts, plan on buying stuff, ebay is a great place to pick up factory sealed products that are a year or two old.

finally, KNOW HOW TO BUILD A COMPUTER. that is what you are doing... you should feel comfortable playing with a computer and playing with electronics. this is going to be mostly a custom job for every thing you do. i dont know of any company that is going to sell you a dashboard molding that is fitted to whatever you are going to stick in the dash.

oh, have fun, dont make this a stressful event. it is supposed to be a hobby. enjoy it!!!
