I have an idea. why not have a switch that you turn on or off when the car is on, so if you do not flip it it will take pictures and send gps date to your email, cus either way the car will be gone with or without pictures. and that way you wont have problems with battery and all that. or have the computer ask for a password, if not entered it will start taking pictures and send emails.

edit. plop, i should have read everything hehehehe didnt notice Bugbyte said the same thing, hahahaha

how would it be possible to send txt messages and send gps data w/out an internet conection? Is there some way to send a txt message to your cell using the cell network from your comp (short of using another cell)?

What if you just attached some IR sensors on the bottom of your car, pointed at a slight angle so that when someone stands next to your car it will start recording. also, who says it HAS to be the computer that records? Anyone know of a miniature digital video recorder? I have seen some but all the ones i look at have screens, and we dont need that. Hmm but then it could not send txt messages or what have you... just thinking aloud.

Okay. My ideas. Your car will most likely be in your driveway when you want to have security. Just run an extension cord out to the car Unplug when you leave in the morning. For internet everyone needs to look into the Boost .20 cents a day internet . You can then sen gps and small sized pics
Um, I guess this is where you put something witty.WITTY

Anyone know if they can find something similar but that can use a different cam with a standard composite connection?

EDIT EDIT: Holy cow, and something a little cheaper!!

Ok hey guys what do you think about this:
    http://spyville.com/motion-activated-security-dvr.html
It can be hooked up to any ol' video camera and has a motion detection feature! So just place a cam in a well hidden location and wire it up to this baby! Its low power too, only 5v! I think im sold on this but I thought I would share .

You could always try one of these. The total power drain is even less than the average car alarm. You just bridge it to your home WiFi network or any nearby access point.
Sends an email with clip attached whenever it detects movement.
    Low current 5v DC powered.
    No computer required for operation.
    Wireless 802.11b/g

Remote video monitoring is really not that complicated.

Sounds like AccessControl, except for the GPS thingy, which will be added.

I am very early in my planning process, but this subject seems very interesting. Not sure if what I have to offer is of any use or not.

Lets looks at what your wanting to do, and what could happen in a break in.

The two things I have seen mentioned are video surveillance and gps logging. And our dilemmas with this is draining the battery due to the system running in order to perform these processes.

Now lets looks at whats probably going to happen during a theft. Mostly likely, they will get in via car being unlocked, using a jimmy, or breaking glass to get in. Once they get in, I bet the most of time, they will go for whatever goodies they can see and some others. They will go for decks, screens, amps subs and such. If they see the pc, they may go for it just in case its something of value. I imagine that this is what will happen most of the time a car gets busted into. In which case, reporting GPS, wont do you any good, since it will happen where you parked.

In the event the whole vehicle is stolen or you get car jacked. Your power problems have been solved for you. They are not driving off in your car, and therefore your battery is charging. Now just need to make sure you got a quick image saved, and that gps reporting the location correctly. But power issues are way low on the list of priorities here.

Now back to just getting jacked of all your stuff. How about let it sleep, but figure out how to get it to wake when your doors, trunk, or hoot open. Most car now days can tell when something is opened, due to the switches they have in them. So just figure out how to tap into that, and have it wake up. If it wakes up quick enough and can record enough and transmit the video or save it, then your good to go. If you cant send video over wireless, can you have a large flash drive securely stored somewhere, that they would not be able to get to, and have it save to that location?

    Just my thoughts.

Definitely some reasonable thoughts for sure. I will agree with the fact that most thefts are not of the car, but of whats in it. So i think in all honesty the best defense is simply a stock look... obviously that can be an issue for most people. So what to do?
Maybe if you had the computer start up fast enough from sleep, then had it project the actual video feed onto the screen itself. lol I would love to see their faces when they find out they are being recorded. Having the video stored on a usb drive is a brilliant idea i think... hide it inside a seat or something. Maybe make it wireless somehow so they have almost no way of knowing its there, so even if they destroy your system you still have a video clip. This would work without internet too.

What i would do personally is get one of those security upgrades that you can get from crutchfield and use its keychain remotes to send you the "text" alert. then on a separate system have it record video... maybe tie the video into the security system itself... as for combining that with GPS, I dont know.

    my two cents...

That would be pretty funny. Another thing to do is have pictures taken with flash on hahaha .. and have the pictures send some how to u like the other people said.
