I have done the impossible!
After reading alot about what my processor couldn't handle, i decided that I don't give up that easily and that i was going to try anyway.
I just received my new Packard Bell IR Remote/Receiver today, knowing that everywhere I read it said that I couldn't play mp3s and use the remote at the same time with my 200 MHZ MMX Dell comp. So I went to work, and with a bit of tweaking, it runs VERY smooth! I couldn't be happier, I got a plugin for it that allows ALL control of Winamp plugin Album List, and I can do mouse movements, start programs, shutdown, etc all with a touch of a button.
What's even better, is that I got my visualizations in winamp to work almost flawlessly ALONG with the remote! So I can start my visualizations with my remote, then change songs WHILE the visualizations are still running. I couldn't believe it. The visuals I am using are part of the package that came with winamp, called tinyscreen. Don't believe everything you read, until you try it out yourself. Thanks guys.

I don't know who told you that was impossible..... Mine isn't much faster than yours and I do twice as much, and I have never had a problem, nor have I been told that I would have a problem. I can have mine run Cobra3, Winamp, Geiss, Discolitez, and IRman at the same time with no problems. Trust me not everyone on this board is as smart as they think they are.

There was a thread which a bunch of these remotes were being sold. While looking up info on plugins etc.. for that remote, I found a bunch of people who said that winLiRC & the PB remote don't play too well on slower PC's. It was summarized that giRder would work a lot smoother than winLirc because it takes up less system resources.
Cliff- what software did you end up using?

Yeah, I thought it would work on a P200mmx, but not a straight PI like a P166 or a P200(not mmx)

I went straight to girder just for the reason you stated above. Girder is the best program I have used in a while, it has everything I could ever even want in a IR remote.
The thing was with the IRMAN and the PB Remote, that the IRMAN does all the busy work within its own integrated chip within the receiver, where the IR receiver on the PB one requires usage of the CPU itself, so people were speculating. I am just happy to pass the info along to anyone who was wanting to do the same.

Speaking of IR remotes, what is the best hardware to use with CobraIII? I should say best for the money. How does the PB remote interact with CobraIII? Thanks!

Hmm.. I think you should ask Charles in the Cobra forum..

I believe IRman is the only one it supports. You can still use the PB remote if you want.

Girder will emulate keystrokes, ergo, PB remote is compatible with just about anything. =)
