    For those considering the Garmin GPS35...

    Which BTW, works great with CoPilot 2001 with a little configuring (haven't tried CoPilot 2002), don't get it.

    Get the new GPS16. It's basically the same as the GPS35, but with WAAS support which triples accuracy when it can see the WAAS satellites.

    Costs about the same or less than the GPS35 too.

    What about the 16? The Garmin website didn't seem to be gearing this toward cars or PC use.

    Also, how is your experience with placing the 35 in your break light? Have pictures? Size? Does it matter if its at a 90 degree to the sky or if there is red plastic over it?

    AFAIK, the 16 isn't prewired for car. But you don't want it pre-wired for car. You're gonna splice it into your system anyway, cutting off any power connector.

    Running your own serial connector is a bit of a pain I suppose, but WAAS is worth it.

    Also, how is your experience with placing the 35 in your break light? Have pictures? Size? Does it matter if its at a 90 degree to the sky or if there is red plastic over it?
    Excellent. If you send me an email during the day tomorrow to remind me, I'll take some pictures.

    I don't know if the angle matters, mine is able to lie flat. Red plastic shouldn't be relevant. My GPS35 has no transparent (of any color) view of the sky. Beige plastic, then silverish backing (that goes behind the light, which is behind the red plastic). I always get a solid lock..

    Running your own serial connector is a bit of a pain I suppose, but WAAS is worth it.
    What type of a connector is on it now, and how do I convert to serial? Would I have to make my own drivers?

    I believe it's just loose wires at the end, so there's no connector ATM.

    Not sure what you mean about convert to serial.

    Anyone actually purchased this? Or should I just get the GPS35PC?

    from what i remember reading, the gps16 can transmit in rs232 (pc serial), it would just take splicing the wires from the unit onto a serial cable and powering it up. and im sure a wiring diagram can be found out there for it.

    Right.

    Basically your choice is

    GPS35 -- prewired serial cable

    GPS16 -- WAAS for enhanced accuracy (15meters to 3meters), enhanced RFI/EMI shielding, but you have to attach your own serial connector to the bare wires (which are already serial configuration, just without a connector).

    If I could trade in my GPS35 for a GPS16, I would, even though attaching the serial connector would be a little work. The huge increase in accuracy would be worth it.

    But the GPS35 is already so good that it's not worth spending anything for more accuracy. But if you currently have neither, the GPS16 is cheaper and far better. Just a little more setup work!
