Suggestion for HD 2.5 vs 3.5

I need about 350-400gig of storage for the media I have. I'm using an M2 atx right now, fairly lightly loaded. I have one 60 gig 2.5 right now as my c drive. Would I be better off to buy 3 more 2.5 in 80gig, 2 more 2.5s in 120 gig or 1 more 3.5 in a 300 gig layout? i'm asking as far as power and ease of use, I have plenty of physical space. Any opinions?

without knowing what else your running I dont know what else is on the 12v line but I would go for the 3.5 personally. Loads cheaper much faster (if that maters as its really the OS that needs the speed) and by the time you start adding multiple drives the extra power is negated. This assumes you have the 12v to spare. Infact if it was me (and I have) I would toss the 2.5 and get a 300 gig 3.5 then you will use less power. Just use ghost to copy your OS over and you wont have to re-build. If you dont have the power then go 2x 120 2.5's. The 2.5's are a bit more shock resistant but I have never had a problem with my 3.5 and its dead cheap to replace if it breaks anyway and way faster.

Yeah, I'd say the same. Ditch your 2.5" completely and just go with a desktop drive.

this is the primary reason I went with 3.5" drive 3+ years ago. At the time a 80 gig was as big as the laptop drives went, and they were $$$$$

Now I think the biggest I've seen is 120 and it was $300....

    So I went with a 200GB seagate barracuda for $94 shipped....lol

In all reality, don't you think a single 400 gig 3.5" drive would take less to power than 5-6 2.5" drives? Not to mention the headache of wiring it all up and finding somewhere to put them all...ick!

100% with you Red, I have no doubt one 3.5 will take less power than multiple laptop drives. My main concern is I dont know what he is running mobo wise, if its a P4 or something then the 12v line might be streched, if its VIA then it would be another advantage to go 3.5 as the 12v is basically unused.
