Panasonic MXE CQ-DFX972U
I know, I know... a factory made unit, but its gettin frustrating trying to fgure out which board to use, LCD, software, navigation intergration.
I have great ideas, but its so hard to work w/ a standard cab truck. Anyone looked at one of these? A bit pricey, but it seems like it could be nice. The display is what caugt my eye, something diffrent than the typical display. Only thing I have aginst it is it doesn't read ID3 tags.
Maybe it could be hacked to run a HD. (I dunno, the specs say that it is limited to 254 file and folder names) It has an AUX for a portable in addittion to the CD mp3's.
You think that a car audio company would just make a deck similar to this one wit a HD in it, but nooooooo.
Here's a link to the only place I've found itPanasonic Mp3 Player
I dunno...
I think I'm gonna give the whole PC thing another go before I bucke. (the factory deck has about had it)

Actually, it's called the "Rio Car" and it was exactly that: a head unit with a hard-drive based MP3 player in it. It is since discontinued and you can buy one on ebay.

And I must say...it is one of the sexiest pieces of electronic equipment I have ever owned. The paid a whole lot of attention to detail, and produced an exceptional piece of equipment.

I know, I remember the rio car. It was about $1000.00 plus if I remember.

Quite true, but sometime in december after they had discontinued the line, they marked the 10 gig version down to $199 and the 20 gig version to $299. I was one of the lucky few to snag one cheaper than most aftermarket head-units.
