How the friggin heck do I get the friggin heatsink off teh friggin processor??

Okay, so, dodgy computer places GLUE the heatsink to the progessor... right, thats just great.. I have 2 processors, a P200MMX, and a Celery 400, that both have this... niw, the problem is that I wanna use the P200MMX for my player, but without a fan... BUT, the heatsink that is on it is TINY, (its one of the standard PI heatsinks, that is the same size as the CPU, with the intergrated fan) now, HOW DO I GET THE STUPID HEATSINK OFF WITHOUT RIPPIN THE CHIP APART!!!!! anyway, help me PLEASE!!!

    hey,

Here's what you do: (this should work)

stick the chip in the freezer, and let it cool completely.

Take a CC or ID (any plastic card will work), and place it between the CPU and the heatsink. Take a flat head screwdriver, and wedge that between the CC and the heatsink. Gently twist it, and the heatsink should pop off.

well the chilling it will weaken whatever epoxy they're using, but without a lever you're going to have a hell of a time getting it off.

You might be stuck with it.

I might have one, you'd just have to pay shipping.

I'm not sure if it's a 200MMX though (I know I have one of those lying around), I'll have to check.

why can't you use the heatsink?

you can also use a can of compressed air upside down and just spray down the heatsink. and how can there be no space to put a screwdriver and a credit card inbetween the ceramic of the chip and the heatsink? the p1's had heatspreaders that were probably atleast 1cm from the edge of the ceramic in all directions.

I have had issues where the heatsink has come off due to a jolt or shock, thus causing my computer to work for about 30 seconds at a time. Anyway, the point of my story is that you could always give it a good "whack" after getting it very cold. It is possible that the heatsink will pop right off, being that the epoxy will be very brittle when it is cold.
