I've been using this laptop to do the kind of things I want to do with this project. In fact, until 1 year ago it was my only PC and it handled video editing, capturing and after effect work. Slowly but steadily. So I know that it can take the task.
The power brick says on its back:
    90W
    Input: 100-240V~1.5A
    Output: 19V 4.74A

It's an old P4 2.5Ghz and gets hot in the baseplate in the processor area. Nothing that cant be solved with usb fans or some venting holes in the topcase.

Is there a simple way to calculate the power needs from the given values?

will something like this http://www.powerstream.com/lta-Compaq.htm work?

Or is the limitation only in the bike's alternator?

FWIW...there are official honda handle warmers...dont know the wattage on that...but wouldnt they be more power demading than a laptop?

EDIT: red...the 7200RPM really increase the performance...but from my experience in working only with this laptop it can cope quite well with the 5Mb/s datarate required to capture DV via firewire. I already have an external firewire and USB2.0 enclosure with a 3.5"HDD that I used for heavy work in the laptop that I can use now if more recording space is needed

usually those heated grips are like 30 watts on the high setting.

Your computer probably pulls closer to 90watts if not more with that desktop processor, hard drive, screen, cd-rom, memory, video card, etc.

Find out what your stator can handle then we can go from there.

from my bike's english section manual:

    Battery: 12V - 6Ah
    Generator: 0.34kW/5000 rpm/min

Headlight: 55W(+55W max light - dont know the english word for it but not of general use)
    brake light: 21W
    Turn signal: 21W*4
    Position Light(?): 5W*2
    License light: 5W

So, from the lights only there is a constant 230W (if I drive like a blinking christmas tree and with the break permanently on - not likely to happen)

If I understand it right the generator can put 340W out. which leaves 110W for accessories. Is this right? how can I measure the generators output at engine's "idle mode" 1300rpm?

    no real way

a multimeter cannot handle the amperage that would need to be run THROUGH it.

They make ammeters that test current, you'd have to see if it works on DC.

So...I cant really know what current is coming out of it without one of those ammeters.
The shop owner that I take my bike to might have one of those...and is willing to help me out with this project.

Will a second battery help with this? I dont plan on using the laptop with the engine off. If really needed i can use the laptop's battery for that taking the adapter out.

If this problem is solved this way: how will I power the 7" monitor? separate dc-dc adapter?

you need to have the stator checked to see if you are going to be able to produce enough juice to do all of this first.
