Cool Look at my new project

    http://www.geocities.com/mr_bubba_zanetti/indash1.html

I'll let you look at the pics yourself.

To make a long story short, I moved my stereo head unit up to where the cupholder was, cut away a bunch of plastic in the dash, cut away a bunch of plastic from a Fujitsu Stylistic pad computer.

Now that it all fits, I need to make some extension cables because I can't mount the mobo right behind the display. (close but far enought to need some cable adjustment.

Once all the cabling is done, I will make the final chops to the dashboard...

Oh yea, it is a 120mhz P1 with 80m ram. The device includes pen input, sort of like a touchscreen, with a pen.

Running Win98 lite, Winamp, Street Atlas RWE. Plenty of power to do all that...but no way it will play movies or fancy visualizations.

The pad computer cost $150 complete.

I am using my same USB D/A converter (guts from labtec speakers) and it uses a laptop 12v power adapter.

I use the standby mode...makes it boot and shutdown a lot quicker.

I have a couple of options for networking it...I use a usb wireless adapter...slow, or I can plug in the regular 10BT adapter.

    Thumbs up

If anyone is mildly curious, the project is up and running.

It is together and installed...and running. I have a few cosmetic things to do, but it is fully operational now.

Looks like this, only more finished, and working.

OK for those who follow the continuing saga...

Just put 2000 miles on it, drove up to Minneapolis and back. It was about 50 deg here (Loosyana) and about 14 deg up north. I let it sit in standby outside (ok the truck was outside) for 4 days as the temp dropped closer to 5 deg and back up to about 20 deg. Then I fired the truck up, let it warm for about 10 minutes with air blowing directly on the back of the lcd assembly (do to the way it was installed). then hit the sleep button and it fired right up just like normal, no problems.

The next night it again dropped to about 12 deg and I tried again, this time I waited about 5 minutes after starting the truck and then fired it up, the screen was very dark, and I started to get some pen jitter (uses an RF mouse device like a touchpad) until it (the truck cabin) warmed up further, another 5 minutes or so then it worked just fine.

I am rather pleased, To put it another way, the computer was ready to go before the diesel truck was (no plugins available)
