Well most of older stuff was a mixture of lead and tin. But since lead is bad for you there are lead free solders available. Problem is that leadfree IMO works like crap. Go figure, something that works great is bad for you., and soemthign that is good for you works like crap.

So now they all modern electronics is moving towards RoHS compliant components and solder.

Lead-free solder requires a higher melting temp so its harder to work with.

I Still choose to use 60/40 tin/Lead mixture solder because it works great. There are so many other things that can kill me in this world I don't care. Just don't breathe in the fumes. That's what I say.

heh - yeah - We use 60/40 for all car stuff, I just wasn't sure if say the sounds cards were using something special for any reason.

I bet your X-Meridian is RoHS compliant meaning they didn't use any lead components or solder. The electronics industry switched over fairly quickly to protect the environment..or themselves. I still think you will be fine with a good quality 60/40 mixture and a good solderign iron. Judging by how well you removed the jacks I think you are good to go.

I was completely amazed at how well I was able to remove the jacks.

    All with a $13 desoldering iron! (http://www.altex.com/product_info.php?products_id=4349)

For electronics use rosin core solder.
