All jet engines build power as they go faster. The stock minivan would probably beat the jet engine in a drag race, but once the jet engine kicks in and the van starts haulin, it's anybody's guess as to how fast it can go.

Are you actually going to drive that around town? Lol that's hilarious...just be careful because there is a ton of lag on jet engines, you let off the pedal, jet keeps going for a good couple of seconds. I'm sure you already knew all this though....

Hell yeah I'm going to drive it around town, but I guess I'lll have to be a little careful about where I use the extra power.

About the lag- this turbine has a free turbine, all I have to do is hold the brake and spool it up to max rpm/egt and when I let off the brake all hell breaks loose. Check out Formula Turbokart at this link.

My friend Dino built 2 karts with the exact same 100 horsepower turbine, one was thrust powered, the other was wheel driven via the free turbine. There's a video of him racing a ferrari somewhere on his site. The wheel driven kart just blows away the thrust driven kart, and the ferrari- up to a certian speed like you said.

I planned on using an automatic transmission with a torque converter to help get it moving but on the advice of a few friends I think I'll try direct drive first. Dino's kart is direct drive, geared for 160 mph top speed. He doesn't plan on going that fast, he just geared it that high to take the edge off the torque. Awesome power in that kart.

yeah I think 20K is about right. Those are T58 helicopter engines with the free turbines removed. I know the guy who built that, his name is eric shedahl. Those motors are good for about 800 pounds of thrust without the afterburners. they were about 1200 horsepower when they were shaft driven. Dino over at turbokart.com is putting one of those in a boat with a surface drive setup.
