Favourite Visual Circuit Builder like MultiSim

Pretty general question. I would like to start designing a circuit with a character LCD in it. My plans are to create a USB module with buttons and a readout for my CarPC.

I am looking for an advanced circuit simulator. I have used multisim, because I like seeing things happen. I have used and am familiar with verilog simulators as well, but I don't like looking at time tables and determining the output that way.

I want to see chips and draw wires and leds light up and everything!

So what alternatives are there to MultiSim in general. And which of those have support for character LCD's? Why do you like or dislike them?

It seems as if Protel has been discontinued, but the compony manufactures a product "Altium" that is supposed to include this old software too. Have you used Altium at all?
