    PC software for gps navigation

I have a windows based carpc, indash touch screen etc, and a USB GPS reciever for the PC. i use roadrunner as my front end, but I wont be upset if i have to run the nav program by itself.

what i need is a nav system that has auto routing, shortest route, turn here etc, all the normal BS.

the problem is I live in New Zealand, so im reluctant to spent $100US or more on a program that comes with maps for the US, i think its safe to say i will NEVER be driving there so paying for those maps seems a bit of a waste.

I can get garmin compatible maps for NZ from here
    http://mapcenter2.cgpsmapper.com/
but im having real trouble finding a PC based program that is worth using, and can take the maps that i can access.

suggestions, links anything helpfull would be great

Does Destinator have NZ maps? There is also TomTom, but again, not sure if there are NZ maps or not.

I know destinator can be made to run on the pc (search mapmonkey or freedrive). I am not 100% sure about TomTom, but I would guess it has been done.

Here's a list of PC software for gps navigation, but a brief look shows there isn't anything for NZ . You may look into Garmin nRoute + New Zealand maps by Garmin, or explore the suggestion of using Destinator.

    update:
this was my solution at present
not ideal, but it will do till i find something better

    solution:
computer with a generic usb GPS receiver
run this program "GPSGate" it emulates and gps to pretty much any other format. ($40US)

get the program nRoute from garmin (unpack the garmin stuff like you would a zip file with winrar, then run the main.msi, that gets around the device detection)

get the map loading program mapsource from garmin
    http://www8.garmin.com/support/downl...ils.jsp?id=209

get the free maps from here for nz
    http://mapcenter2.cgpsmapper.com/mapsetview.php?id=185

get the POI (point of interest) LOADER HERE
    http://www8.garmin.com/support/downl...ils.jsp?id=927

get the POI - speed camera info from here
    http://www.gme.net.au/garmin/custom_POIs.php

does anyone know of any skins or something for nRoute and/or roardunner,

I was looking for the same thing few years back (also in NZ) and only solution was to run Navman maps in a pocket pc emulator. This didn't look promising so I didn't go ahead with it.

One of the main reason I held back on a carputer is the lack of navigation, until now hopefully.

How good is the free map? Can you post some screenshots?
