in the small compartment at the rear between the brake light and window (where there is no window tint)...WORKS PERFECT HERE, connects instantly.
When I had the receiver (Globalsat BU-353, previously had a Rikaline 6010) placed on the rear deck next to the 6x9s the window tint degraded the satellite signal a lot, sometimes it wouldnt even connect, or only connect if i restarted the carpc...since i have moved it behind the brake light, it connects very quickly with usually 8-11 satellites.
that is nifty. but a truck like mine is a bit harder. if i could only connect it in the rear, then i would hafta look into how GM installed the onstar gps receiver. but since all my setup is up front in the dash, i need to find a good safe place to hide it. i like that stuffing it in a lil ducky. but i cant really do that. and it needs to look natural and flow with my interior and truck personality.
its like getting a hidden spycam for security reasons, and hiding it in a plant in an apartment that is obviously not fit for a plant. ya know?

I put mine on the dash in the front left corner to get it closer to the center of the road for the best reception.

Actually, the best reception would be the clearest veiw of the sky. Plastic is more or less transparent to the reciever but the steel structure is not.
Centering it in the window would be best reception, up against the a pillar on one side or the other would not.
But we're splitting hairs now...............the practical difference is pretty small.
Being closer to the center of the road might help with positioning, but given the tolerance for accuracy error in commercially available gps recievers, I highly doubt it. Mil spec units are much more accurate, but you won't get your hands on one of those without making a couple year commitment!

Mine is under the scuttle panel in front of the windscreen. It is hidden and gets some protection from the weather, but with only two layers of plastic between it and the sky, it still gets good reception.

New system at design/prototype stage on BeagleBoard.
Mine is actually under the top of my dash, near the defrost vents, the GPS will go through plastic fine. My dash is about 1/4 inch thick and works great.
I had mine under my passenger seat for a little while... seriously..

the tomtom go 720 is easy to slip off the clip holder and hide it, and its a breeze putting it back on...i know some of the other ones like the mio are very hard to take down and hide and then put right back up....this is really important to consider when purchasing a gps.
