GNS 5860 USB GPS TMC Receiver driver install

Just purchased GNS 5860 USB GPS TMC Receiver unit and at first sight it looks great cosmetically and on paper.

But when trying to install driver which came with unit, installation seems to go ok with no error messages. Once I plug the unit into usb port,

1. 'Installing device drivers' balloon pops up.
2. 'Found new hardware' dialogue box apears and asks: 'windows needs to install driver software for your CP2102 USB to UART Bridge Controller' with 'locate and install driver software' option.
3. After clicking on this, approx 2-3 mins passes, another error message comes up advising the drivers are not installed properly.

I thought drivers accompanying device may be out of date so went to GNS support page to dl updated drivers for vista, but they were the exact same ones as I already had. Gave them a go anyway with no luck.

I have tried rebooting, plugging, unplugging and praying but nothing has worked so far.

When checking device manager, device has got a question mark on it and its telling me no drivers are installed.

pc specs:

intel core 2 duo e6550
2 gig ram
running vista ultimate

Anyone else have this unit with same issue?

No ideas particular to this device, but plug it in, go to device manager, delete the device and let windows try again.

Are you logged in as a user w/ Admin rights?

Most GPS units use a USB-to-serial driver, as the GPS is just sending a stream of data along a serial connection.
I know the GlobalSat BU353 uses the Prolific PL203 USB-to-serial chipset and associated driver.
Some digging around might yield what driver you need.

Well it seems this device uses CP2102 USB to UART Bridge Controller. Have dug around on driver cd and on gns site and this driver is already installed in add/remove programs but not indevice manager - no driver listed here.

So I guess the question is how do I manually update driver? What is the file extension of device drivers so I can point windows to them manually?

there should be an ini file in that folder. Just point windows to the install folder. Or if there is a driver folder point it to that

Plug/unplug the receiver with device manager open. It will update when you unplug/plug it in. When its plugged it and you've identified it (I don't know if the UART Bridge Converter would be in the COM and PORTS section of device manager...) delete the device (there's an icon for a computer with a red x over it, or you can probably just press the delete key on your keyboard.)

And as themlruts points out, its just a folder you point windows to.

I have pointed windows to .ini file but get another error message: 'Windows encountered a problem whilst updating your drivers for device...Please contact manufacturer for drivers'.

I am now almost certainly convinced it is either a hardware issue or problem with vista driver? Have contacted manufacturer for assistance. Will keep post updated as I dont think I am the only one that will have this problem.

Oh forgot to answer this. Yes I have tried this. Also installing drivers from device manager. When deleted and plugged back in, windows will attempt to install driver. After a while it would ask for me to point to drivers on pc. After this, error message: 'Windows encountered a problem whilst updating your drivers for device...Please contact manufacturer for drivers'.
