If GPS is all you want... then probably a PocketPC. If you want to use other PC features then the PC gives you a bigger better screen and greater expandability. PocketPC can be moved from car to car easily too.

Software... for me I'd say Destinator Or Routis. I still feel Destinator is superior but Routis is almost as good (ahead on some points) and is a fraction of the price, plus you get the PC and WinCE version all in one package.

If you wanna use pocket PC TomTom navigator V2.24 is the best I have tested out of the list so far :

Destinator 3 - To slow to reroute on complicated road, it can forever reroute if you dont stop driving. A fast reroute is important driving in a city.

Mapsonic 1.3 - Navigation is not so clear but its more workable than destinator 3 when it comes to rerouting.

TomTom 2.24 - Initial route calculation takes too long but everything works well after that.

Alturion V5.2 - Have nice feature and fast but not easy to use, kept crashing on my PDA.

I know 3 other people and all rate TomTom 2 when driving around London. Some says destinator 3 is better in US and TomTom is not.

If you are going for the PC solution, i can recommend Navicar from Simatech

tailor made for 7" touch screen....

i have been searching to see what everyone else is using for gps software... and everyone seems to like desitnator, tom tom, mappoint and others.... everyone says street atlas is crap... honestly.... the ONLY thing that other software has thats even remotly better, which i dont think thats the right term...."cool" is probably better suited for it... is the 3D view. But in 3D view, i have not seen ONE application that gives street names of decent info that you would get in normal overhead view.

maybe its time for everyone to give street atlas 2004 another chance. I actualy cant find anything BETTER right now. am i just missing something?

3D is actually much better view to use. Some poeple call it just a cool factor but I find it very useful when I quickly wanna divert as I can see the road layout better. I can also see whats comming up ahead much further than 2D view and plan accordingly to the traffic condition. The POIs are easy to spot and you can also see more of how the route is done.

Yes I know most or all dont display road names when in 3D views...but then do you really need to know the name of the surrounding roads as you drive to your destination?

But once you use 3D you will never wanna go back to 2D when navigating. Sure planning the routes on the map is better on 2D.

Of course some may say 2D is better but from my experience Ill take 3D anytime once all the route is set

I havent use street atleast so I cant say its crap. Try TomTom 2 on PDA or some other and you will see what I mean by 3D experience.

I think all decent GPS s/w does but not in 3D navigation mode.


I do not understand the point of having a navigation system when your screen does not even display the name of the streets in your vincinity.

They do display roads name in 2D, in "route planing" mode only.


You might as well look up at the road signs.

You are not supposed to read whats the name on the road, it should show you and say what road to take next. All good GPS s/w should be able to do just that

I have used Destinator 3 (PDA), TomTom Navigator 2.24 (PDA), Alturion 5.2 Pro (PDA/PC), Mapsonic 1.3/Mapstore 2.3 (PDA/PC). Routis does 3D too and it is supposed to be good.

They all have 3D modes built in. If you dont like driving in 3D you can always switch it off. As I said I dont think 2D is suitable for navigations...3D is many time better. I only ever use 2D when planning a route.
