sorry to raise this post from the dead... I just purchased a bu303 and am thinking about buying mappoint, based on all the threads I've read, mappoint plus AGPS is the way to go for me. However, I went to newegg and they have THREE versions for sale:
Microsoft MapPoint 2004 North America Academic Academic Version - Retail $39.95

    Microsoft MapPoint 2004 Upgrade - Retail $207.95

    Microsoft MapPoint 2004 - Retail $225.95

YIPES! which one do I need?
    thanks!

I believe you can oly get the academic version if you're an educational institution.. the upgrade works only if you have an earlier version.. but the final result should be the same.

MS MapPoint + AGPS add-on was indeed useful in the past, but since Microsoft released MS Streets & Trips 2005 with its improved GPS functionality I'd recomend to go with S&T instead of MP + AGPS.

thanks for the headsup! I'll be travelling from NM to TX this next week and will test it out for my big trip to CT from NM...

I am planning on installing a Carputer in a few months, would MS Streets & Trips work well with say Frodoplayer or RR?

If all you want is what MapPoint + AGPS does you will be bitterly dissapointed, you might as well buy Streets and Trips 2005

You MAY be interested in MapPoint and Road Runner, that is a better combination. There are NEWER MapPoint threads around than this there is a recent one in the Road Runner that chats about some of the differences between the two.

    right on thanks stevie,
I am planning on installing a Carputer in a few months, would MS Streets & Trips work well with say Frodoplayer or RR? For right now I'm looking for something that will do routes(door-to-door), re-routes, and whatever cool functionality one can think of just for my laptop while I travel across the U.S. any thoughts?

No, S&T is not good for integration compared to D3 or MapPoint. In RR, MapPoint itself is running as a component to a program rather than a program itself.

If it's just a laptop on the passenger seat and you'll be using the laptop mouse/keyboard it wouldnt make much difference how it's embedded. If you want it running so it looks/feels like an aftermarket sat-nav or factory sat-nav system in the car, then S&T will not cut the mustard

And just to add to the above, S&T (or MP + AGPS) are still really useful "only" as trip planning software, but they pale in comparison to what iGuidance can do for you as navigation software. You may check a brief review of S&T and iGuidance >>here<<
