    bu-303

i dont have an earthmate, BUT i do have a BU-303 that i was going to open up to "CONFORMAL COAT".

Ya'll prolly know what this is, but for those that dont, it is a spray on substance designed specifically to water proof PCB's. I was going to open up the BU-303, conformal coat the internals, let it dry, put it back together, then run some D-MASTIC (or N-MASTIC) by shellys around the outside and seams, this way, i can open it again if i want to, without having to peel all that rubber off, and its water proof (mastic is used to hold the windshield of your car in, and weather proof it) one of the mastic range stays tacky, the other drys with a skin, i just cant remember which is which right now.

    thats my thoughts....

    success

well, i thought i'd post an update - conformal coating the internals works just fine (as this is what conformal coating is designed for) it keeps moisture/condensation from forming on the internals also.
My BU303 has survived sydneys crazy rain storms, so im pleased, and it all looks nice n factory from the outside, the magnet is still as effective, and it wont matter if i forget too remove it after a journey and it rains.

I can add, as an update, that I did, in fact, drill a hole through the roof (gut check) and then sealed it... it took the South Florida heat and rain just fine for approximately 4 months. Just sold the Jeep, so dunno how long it would have lasted.

anyone dip the earthmate without the plastic cover...seems like it would be a bad idea, but it would cut down on the size a bit.

cool thanks, how did you get it to stick to the outside of your car...I'm thinking magnent, but it is hard to find one that small that is strong enough...my speakers are afraid of me right now.

I used clear sealant (read: caulk) and it stuck till the end.

I ended up dipping the magnet and the GPS separatly, then sticking them together after about 4 hours of drying when it is still a bit tacky...don't think they will ever come apart, the dip is really sticky stuff. Cant wait to stick it to my car and see what kind of reception it gets
