is it mounted in the cab ? looking through glass ?
My bu-303 gps receiver's red light is always on. I have it mounted under the front windshield. The GPS info utility program that came with it is set to COM1, but when I scan the port it says no device detected on com1. When I check the start GPS box it says something like "SPST....OK". But it never finds any satellites or anything.
So what should I do in the device manager in my ports section to troubleshoot this device. I have never gotten it to lock, so I suppose it's possible that it is just defective out of the box, but more probable that I just need to fix the com port settings or something. Atleast that's what I'm hoping for.
Also, if someone has a link to the latest drivers for the BU-303, I would like to uninstall and try them as well.
p.s. I'm trying to use it with Routis.

Try switching com ports. Mine does that same thing if I have it set to com 1. Mine is detected on Com 3.
It is mounted on top of the front dash looking up to the sky under the windshield.
I tried changing the com port away from com 1 inside the GPS Info utility but the drop down tab did not let me select other ports and it seemed to always keep defaulting back to com1. Do you have your's set to 9600 baud? And what check boxes do you have checked in the GPS info utility. (WAAS, etc....)Try switching com ports. Mine does that same thing if I have it set to com 1. Mine is detected on Com 3.
move it outside and see if it locks

Solved, thanks.
I removed the device, rebooted and reinstalled. I was able to now change the com port to com4. My device manager also verified that the USB to serial driver was installed on com4. Then I moved it outside the car and started the GPS info utility...........what do you know, I got a lock.
The windscreen probably has some sort of reflective coating that prevents the gps picking up the weak sat signals, move the unit to a location under a different window or waterproof it and place it outside, lots of people have done this, try afor more info on materails used to waterproof etc

I sounds more like it was a software issue. There's no need to waterproof the BU-303. It's already weather proof.Originally Posted by SAScooby
Is it supposed to be set to 9600? I've got the same setup. I saw 4800 used in some of the literature, so I assumed that was the most stable.

I think 4800 is default. I doubt you'll get any performance gain from boosting it up.Originally Posted by Zoltan
