    Garmin : GPS35 vs GPS18

Is the technical difference substantial enough to justify the price difference (more than double) between the two:

    GPS18: http://www.garmin.com/products/gps18oem/spec.html
    GPS35: http://www.garmin.com/products/gps35/spec.html

Do they both not update 1x per second?

If you're referring to the Garmin 18 USB, then you should know that it only produces Garmin binary data, not NMEA data. According to Garmin, there is only one other company that has written software to interface with the Garmin USB interface (other than Garmin). The other company is Northport Systems and their product is called FUGAWI Moving Map.

    Hope that helps.

I'm reffering to both models in PC (serial + cigarrette jack) format.

Thumbs up Yes.. 18pc will output NMEA

Here is a FAQ for the different GPS 18 models.

    http://www.gpscentral.ca/products/garmin/18.htm

You had me worried for a while that the 18 serial version wouldn't work.. phew!

I saw in another message that you have a shop in Toronto near the DVP and 401. What shop is it? Do you sell OPUS power supplies?

    Thanks!

    Bill.

    Compatability was never an issue.

What makes the GPS35 sell for double that of a GPS18 when they both update @1x/sec?

C'mon GPS35 owners speak up and reprahzent...

Bill, It seems as though opus does not want to have anything to do with Canada.

    Response from Garmin...

Here is the response I got from Garmin concerning the differences between the 35 and 18pc..

    Dear Bill,

It's really a matter of cost of materials. The GPS 35 PC design, being an
older design, uses more expensive parts. The GPS 18 PC is in most respects
a better design for significantly less money. The only differences worth
noting (other than WAAS compatibility as you noted) are that the GPS 18 PC's
cigarette lighter plug contains a voltage regulator that steps down from 12
V automotive to 5 Vdc and that the GPS 18 PC's serial output voltage swing
is from 0 to 5 V, rather than the -6 to +6 V used by the GPS 35 PC. If you
remove the cigarette lighter plug from a GPS 18 PC, its voltage supply
requirements change to 5 Vdc, rather than 12 V automotive.

If you are just plugging into a cigarette lighter socket for power and
plugging the DB-9 serial connector to your laptop's com port, then the GPS
18 PC is a functional replacement for the GPS 35 PC and the price is roughly
    cut in half.

    Regards,
    Brad Wiseman
