might be a stupid question - but i can't seem to figure it out...mappoint 2004 on MS's website goes for about $300.. is this the mappoint everyone is talking about here? or is there some other module/version that is cheaper that is avail?

MapPoint is $300 but is not intended for incar GPS use... that is North is always up and can't be changed. Don't waste your time. I used it for a while because i got it cheap via a student discount. I also use it to map wardrives (stumbverter) .
