    Geo Caching

Does anyone do the geocaching ???

    http://www.geocaching.com/

It's where people hid a stash of things and give gps coordinates etc.. to find them. Then you take an item, leave an item, fill out a log, then update internet data on the specific cache.
There are items that have been tracked all over the contry and even into other countries. Sounds like fun..

I figure that with all the GPS systems here, it would be a good topic..

Done it several times. Not really something you can do with your car GPS. You go mostly off road so you need a hand held GPS.

A friend showed me geocaching and found a 'stash' in our favorite campground. It was a lot of fun finding it, seeing what others had left and then we filled in the log.

As you said, it can be tracked around the world and we did just that. Since we were in the states but we live in Germany we made sure we entered "Germany wuz here".

They leave some strange and funny things in there.

There were two geocaches at the base that I worked at when I was in Iraq. A few of them had popped up in different areas of the country. All of them were started by soldiers who had been through the area. The majority of us carry PSN-11 (Pluggers) which are Army GPS devices. (I always tend to be an instructors on how to use them.)

Geocaching in Iraq? Don't think I'd want to do that.

Pretty much all the cache's in Iraq have been placed by soldiers and they are all on military controlled land/areas. I never did go out and look for the two on my base. Would have been fun.

That site makes me want to get a handheld GPS. There are a few just 1-3 miles from me.

If you have an pocket pc and a gps for it, there's a nifty little utility called GPS Tuner which you can use for geocaching. Check it out: http://www.gpstuner.com/ $35 sure beats $100-$200 for handheld unit.
