16 months for stalking by GPS

Not really sure where to post this, but it is GPS related so.....
This guy has to be the poster child for being smart and dumb at the same time.

    Source: USA Today
A man charged with stalking his ex-girlfriend by attaching a global positioning system to her car was sentenced to 16 months in state prison, prosecutors said. Ara Gabrielyan, 33, of Glendale, was sentenced Friday after pleading no contest to one count of stalking and two counts of making criminal threats, said Deputy District Attorney Debra Archuleta. Police said Gabrielyan tracked the woman, who was not identified, after she ended their relationship. He showed up unexpectedly at a book store, an airport and dozens of other places. Authorities contended that Gabrielyan attached a cell phone to the woman's car on Aug. 16 with a motion switch that turned on when the car moved, transmitting a signal each minute to a satellite. Information was then sent to a Web site that allowed Gabrielyan to monitor the woman's location.

It may well have been a store bought kit. They are not cheap but can be found very easily with a for spy kits.

    Nothing fancy at all.

http://www.skytel.com/products/fleethawk.htm is one such system that uses only a sat IIRC. Subscription is $34CDN a month, $500CDN or so one time fee for the black box that goes in the car. There are other system that use the cell network instead of a sat. Can even be used to monitor speed, RPM, engine temps, etc.

Edit: And these are totally legal systems, used for tracking trucks and all kinds of stuff.

Yeah but stalkers are sick, twisted individuals. Cops are... well... there's a difference I'm sure, just can't think of it.
