BU-303 ! I have found the problem for all!

There is NO ROOM what so ever to replce it with even a bigger watch battery

You guys don't want to be replacing this with a battery.
a) you don't know the correct volatge - you could blow the GPS
b) you could explode the battery because the charge circuit is meant to service a cap.

Also be very careful around these high value caps. If you short circuit them they can explode in your face. I suggest that if you are not sure about these electronics, you should leave it to the qualified. For you own safety of course.

Actually it's a type of battery.

To be specific it's a ELNA 3.3V 0.22F Cell Capacitor

It's a alternative to coin cell batteries.

Hmm strange thing is, my BU-303 has started behaving itself and is performing well over the last fews days. I'm wondering if it was something to do with the weather (heavy cloud cover etc) or maybe the US turned down the power on the sats for a while

It is not in ANY WAY a battery! It is a capacitor!

Go back to your basic electronics books if you need to see the difference.
Elna are only suggesting it as an alternative to cells IN CERTAIN CIRCUMSTANCES. (Being where the circuit has been designed to accept it)

Seriously people - be careful with these supercaps. They can explode if shorted when charged. I would recommend keeping both eyes intact for future use.

So... I have been following this thread.

I was thinking of simple removing the supercap, I mount it already on a metal surface, don't mind waiitng a minute for sat lock, though I leave the PC on standby so the USB doesn't lose power, either way.

Will I get better sat lock than I get at the moment (My BU303 is getting REALLY bad, some of the time I get nothing, when i do it's only just locking - it's mounted on the *****ing roof too)

As stated above, mine seems to have got better again. might just ahve been a weather thing.
