    Can I use my cellphone's (i860) GPS?

Ok I recently bought a Motorola i860 (Nextel) and it has the built-in GPS. I looked in the settings and under interface it has NMEA Out. I also have the USB data/ charging cable. I tryed a search for info on NMEA but I am still kinda confused. I just want to know if its possible to use the cell's GPS for a car pc. Also has anyone tryed it yet?

I know Nextel has software to use the GPS to track people with the GPS in their cell (corporation and stuff). So I guess it could work but would it work with navigation software?

I havent connected it yet because the cable should be here today, haha. But what would it have to do? So if it does show up thats what I would need it to do right? All/most programs read the data from a NMEA device right? Sorry I dont know much about the protocals and stuff with GPS, just how to use it and how it works.

I was just checking my cell phone because I saw this thread. Mine does create a com port but even after I configured iguidance to look at that port I still get no strings. Are you sure this is possible?

I didn't think it would be that easy. That's why I checked first.

But either way what I was going to suggest, after you connect the phone and get the virtual com port, just use hyperterm to see if you are getting anything at all from the port. the other thing is that it might not give you anything if the phone doesnt have any gps signal.

I'd expect it to spit out NMEA strings even without a signal. It may need to receive an input string though before it starts spitting out data -- just depends on what the manufacturer decided to do.
