    Tracking a GPS Reciever

    Hey

I was curious about something and haven't really been able to reasearch it much. I'm wondering if all GPS recievers are tagged with some sort of GUID. If so, it should be possible to query the location of a particular GPS reciever. This would have many obvoius benefits, not the least of which would be tracking your car in the event of theft or track your kid's cars or something. What I'm really interested in is somehow tracking the locations of all police vehicles in the area and that is something I want to investigate very much....

Imagine the locations of all police vehicles on your screen at any given time? Haha, that would be so sweet.

GPS receivers...well, receive. They don't transmit. So you can't query their location because they don't broadcast anything.

I've heard of systems that are able to detect the repeater in police cars. Supposedly, there is a repeater in the car that picks up the transmission from the officer's radio and rebroadcasts it at higher power. This detector can tell when a police car is in the vicinity but not where it is.

And no, I don't have a link to one. That's how long ago I heard about it. They may use a totally different system now.
