There are no gyroscopes involved in GPS.

The design of the GPS system is to provide adequate coverage world wide at all times. Your question is most likely relate to what is the best GPS software mapping program for your region. Search on terms "best GPS" or "Best GPS software" and you're sure to find many results.

    Hey boom,
Well I live in Illinois and I use a *cough* Delorme Earthmate USB with iGuidance v. 2.0 Just so you know, I have not had a single problem with locking onto satellites. It takes usually about a minute (max) or so to lock, and once locked, it stays. The good thing about a Delorme is that you don't have to mount it outside of the car to pick up satellites well. I pick up on average 7-9 satellites in Illinois. That's from the Chicago area, to the Joliet area, and further south near Charleston. The maximum number of satellites I had gotten at one time was 12.

Many people advise against the Delorme Earthmate USB. The main thing that sucks about them is the software that comes with it. I think they sell for $120 which includes the receiver and Street Atlas 2005. Street Atlas is about the worst GPS software for in dash screens. It's not too bad with a monster sized laptop screen, but is too hard to read and see on a 7 inch.

That's where iGuidance comes in. Unfortunately iGuidance is another $100 or so. Based on my personal experience I would recommend the Delmorme Earthmate. I haven't had a single problem with mine (except recently when I closed the cable in my hatch and sliced into the cord a little - now I can pick up max 3 satellites )

If you can find a used Delorme receiver for cheap, I can help you out with 'finding' software for it. PM me if you ever need more information....
The Delorme USB is NMEA compliant so it'll work with iGuidance, Routis, Destinator, etc....

If you want screen shots showing the satellite coverage or of iGuidance in action also let me know. I will be writing a review for Mobile-Effects.com on iGuidance, and an article explaining how to get the Delorme USB working with software other than Street Atlas.
