I have a quick question... I was rereading the word doc trying to figure out a what this other guy was thinking and I realized that he was using a file called POI.DAT... I have POI.BIN and Iv been able to get my hands on a POI.RAW... My question(s) is this; is is there a difference? where did the .DAT file come from? etc.

    Anyone know? Why?

I'm currently extracting my poi.raw (2x on dvd) and poi.bin (only one on dvd is in the mapdata/hawaii folder) and I'll be moving them to FileFactory for you all. the poi.bin is only ~400Kbs. The poi.raw are ~150MBs each. These links are only good for 7 days... so get'm while you can. lol I'll edit this post as I upload each file.

    POI.BIN
    (~400Kbs - hosted at FileFactory)

    POI.RAW-1
(25MBs compressed RAR file - hosted at DCCarPCs.com)

    POI.RAW-2
(25MBs compressed RAR file - hosted at DCCarPCs.com)

/edit and no, no clue where the POI.DAT came from... sorry

Should we take a look at the "MapLoader" program to see what it does during loading of the map?
I think it is the one that responsible for loading and building POI database.
I dont' know, just throw out the words so those able to do can look at.

very good point i would think it need to be compatable with maploader to properly load anyway

idea #2 reduce the poi file to 10 or so entries and load it in maploader then see how the entries are truly distributed in the respective loading linear or mixed up etc .
are there any programs capable of encapsulating (run a slave program) to see what memory adress its currently using and logging it to a file

Softice, though I have never used it. Most software hackers use it to disable cd checks and serial # checks.

I was trying to compare POI file to the favorites file. Since I know exactly what is in it and I can edit or delete it through their interface. I am sure they couldn't be that differen't.

At any rate, I am almost finished with the hardware part of the project and I will move on to the software side of my project in the upcoming weeks and see if I can't be more help.

The 2 poi.raw files are identical. They were in subdirectories cd2 and cd3, so, I can only assume that it is like that for convience. I also determined from a previous thread on this subject that there are 3,173,121 poi's.

This thread has some info about the file where they tried this before.
