hey guys,
i was looking at receivers on pocketgpsworld.com and the holux seems to get the best reviews and scores, but they're made in the UK. i was just checking to see if they work in the US as well and what kind of software works with it. if its not US compatible i was thinking of going with the Rikaline. is that any good?

thanks! im getting one then along with iguidance. will they work together?
The 'G' in GPS stands for global. Any receiver works in any part of the world. The actual issue is the availability of maps for your region of the world, but that is a software/data issue.
You should read the FAQ for newbies about GPS in the FAQ Emporium. Click on the link in my signature and it will take you there. You'll find a thread on GPS that includes the various software and comparisons.

thanks bug. im looking now.
one thing im curious about though is wired vs. bluetooth on the receiver. im sure wired would be a nicer permanent solution if u can cut off the cig lighter and wire it directly to the car's power. but bluetooth would be nicer overall because there are no wires, but u have to charge regularly. anyone used both and have an opinion on what u preferred?
I've got a holux USB/BT GPS receiver & iGuidance v2.0 & it works.
<> holux will power up and down w/ the pc if it's connected via USB
<> Holux will shut down after 10min of no BT connection and requires manual interaction to fire it back up.

thanks. will plugging into the usb charge it as well or does it still require being plugged into the cig lighter?
yes. since the cig.adapter holds the other end of the usb cable (when used)
If the Holux is a perminent fixture to your car pc, will you even need the battery?

The new GPSlim236 by Holux doesn't have the automatic shut-off feature, so no need for "manual interaction" ;-)Originally Posted by grepzen

i'm not sure how it all works. i'd like something i can do like this...
Computer <-------cable-------> GPS Receiver
I want that to power it AND send signal, so i dont have anything taking up my cig lighter space. Is that possible? So i wouldnt even have to use the car's power, just power it off the computer? That's how my webcam works. It seems it should work the same way.
