Why? It is just receiving signals already present around us.

I TOTALLY agree with you, but thats not how airline manufactuers see it.
Many airlines I have asked strictly prohibit GPS devices from being used
inside airplanes, yes they do not transmit so basicly there is no problem.

But that does not stop their policies.

Basiclly the thing I have found out is you need to ask the pilot, if he doesnt
have much technical knowledge on how GPS device work he will more than
    likely say no.

There isnt really much reason for anyone to use GPS inside the plane apart from farting around with it.

True it probably wont do any harm but if you are told to put it away then put the damn thing away and dont act like a spoilt brat

They have their own policies and if you dont comply they can **** you up if they want to.

Its not the glass thats the issue, its the metal around the window and most of it around you that stops GPS receivers getting enough signal.

Inside planes are the worst, however it depends on the positioning of the satellites around you, sometimes you might get enough for a 3D fix, sometimes only for 2D or at min atomic clock time (1 sat).

I have held an antenna in the window on a trip from Auckland to Christchurch and had shown on my PDA the current speed, height and heading.

Theres so many disconceptions on this board about GPS and windshields/windscreens, GPS signals dont mind glass at all its metal that will deflect a radio signal and cause a weak signal.

This is why even if you have a antenna mounted behind the windscreen/shield and you only have sats behind you you will get a poor signal, turn your car around and they come from behind (the metal roof) and into view thru your glass windscreen/shield and wham you suddernly have a decent number of satellites for your GPS device to calculate your position etc.

The best place for an antenna is the middle top of your roof or the middle front of your roof by the window rubber as long as you dont have anything higher than your roof thats metal you should pretty well have a reasonable consistant number of sats to provide good 3D nav.

All electronic equipment give off some sort of electronic radiation. Thats why we have FCC and CE qualifications. Even if all the GPS mouse does is recieve, the electronic components still give off some noise.

Some planes already show GPS tracking but its zoomed out pretty far and not really fun to watch.

    As far as interference goes...
I doubt the interference compares to the 30 laptops being used in business class, or the 500 lcd monitors embedded into the headrests, or the 40 cell phones that people never turned off to begin with, or the 25 walman/mp3 players in use, or the 20 gameboys that are being played, or the.......

Just check this site if your uncertain which airline allows the use of GPS while in flight.

Also, as far as it being safe or not you can read this article as well
