Google Map Tracking, A New Approach!

Sorry for the delay. Unfortunately I haven't heard back from SnyperBob. Anyone else able to help with hosting the vids? They are 700k and 1.5mb respectively

To answer a few questions:

WebDog: Still up in the air on what offerings there will be. Chances are it will be available from one of my servers.

PurDooM: That wouldn't be very practical/logical. If you had a FAST connection you could technical "replace" your mapping software with Google Maps, I wouldn't advise it. There is a lot of other great software out there. That isn't the what I am trying to do.

Daley: I live in Houston, sounds like you're in the area

KE4NYV: Looks good. You are doing the same thing I am doing, different approach though of data transfer.

When it's complete a small app will run on a GPS/Inet enabled laptop/carpc. This will send GPS coordinates to the backend mySQL server that will log the data. You shouldn't need a hefty connection because the GPS communicates to the serial port at 4800 bps. We are only concerned with a small amount of that data.

I have attached a few screenshots. I also have 2 video's taken from some desktop recorder software I found. It's a little choppy at times but you can see the functionality. If anyone wants to host them I'd be happy to send them. They are 700k for the Map view and 1.5M for Satellite view.

The screenshots show the last spot a recorded coordinate was. The video's show the preceding 5 minutes of travel (filesize would be lot bigger for anything longer).

Yeah, this is I how I do my tracking (I'm KC0HJX btw). I wrote a little VB program to read my lat and lon coords, then use the "inputpos" CGI script available from findu.com .. .If I'm moving, the script is called once every 5 minutes; if I'm stationary, it runs every 20 minutes. Of course, I only use this when I'm in my car, so it's not like I update my position every 20 mins every single day. I have a page on my website at http://www.tornadocentral.com/aprs.shtml to let folks 'track' me via Google Maps... I'm a storm chaser, so this works well for my nowcasters.

Maybe I'll get the Kenwood mobile with built-in APRS, but for now, it works pretty well. I also have another page I'm debugging that shows my path (over the past 2 days) and a log of all date and times associated with each position update.

USAPHOTOMAPS uses this already with the microsoft terra server btw It also has GPS functionality too..

Leddy, I'm pretty sure in an hour or two we could have an app that say every x minutes hooks up a DUN connection, calls a URL with the location and hangs up again. The URL can post it directly in to a mysql database then you can browse it using the pages you've already built.

I have most of the bits already, just a matter of putting them together.
