    Question Gps Garmin Etrex.

I have a Etrex and when I try to tie it turns on and it turns off immediately. I would like to know that it is a problem that needs the shipping of the equipment for a specialized maintenance or it is a problem of software modernization.

Try connecting the unit to a computer using the USB cable.
Maybe there is a problem with the battery power.

    Gps.

Thanks for your suggestion. I donīt have a USB cable, but I have a serial cable. Therefore my PC not found the GPS (damaged), but it found a GPS (not damaged).

    Do you have another suggestion?

Silly question you have power reaching you etrex (batteries, Y cable)?? I know the standard serial cable does not provide power to the unit and you need to get either a USB cable (with power transfer) or a Y cable that plugs the etrex into the car's electrics and into the PC .

That said, I've only had the CarPC installed for the last 3 weeks and so far I never managed to get my etrex working with the PC for more than 2 minutes. It does stay on - I do have batteries installed and a USB cable (with power transfer). I don't know if it's the Serial to USB cable I have, the software (map monkey - old version ;-) ), or something else in the middle of trouble shooting.

So at the moment I can't help you any further, sorry.

I THINK there was a firmware issue with the eTrex series with it cutting off like you are describing. Drop by www.garmin.com and check to see if your firmware is up to date. If so, its a power issue with the battreries or external. The only Y cables I have seen for the eTrex are Serial/Lighter Plug versions. I have yet to see a USB version. Most people just run a USB/Serial adapter, but this still does not allow you to power the unit FROM the USB port.

There was also an issue with the batteries popping a little loose in the compartment causing them to loose contact for a brief moment, thus causing the GPS to cut off. I had the same proble with my legend. A small peice of foam to hold the batteries tight in place fixed the problem.

Slightly off topic I know - but in case anyone is interested you can now get USB cables that provide the ETREX with power from GPSW in the UK

    http://www.gpsw.co.uk/details/prod2160.html

and it works exactly as you would expect it too, I transfered a full 8 day walk from the PC to the Etrex via this cable without a problem.
