Inside one of your side mirrors may work, actually, but I would guess that the bumper wouldn't fare so well. Having the receiver on top of your car serves two purposes: 1) clear view of the sky, and 2) your car's roof or trunk lid works as the ground plane. Both enhance the antenna's ability to lock on more satellites.
For reference, I hide my antenna just under the plastic of the dash, at the center, right where the windshield meets the dash. I get a decent reception at about 6-8 satellites and it is completely hidden.
