GPS Receiver sharing

This may be an impratical question for some, but this is what I have:
An existing pioneer avic-d1 that I am installing into an RV that will also have a computer installation.

I would like to know if it is possible to use the GPS antenna/receiver in the pioneer to connect to my computer and run additional GPS software on a touchscreen in the back of the RV. If so, how?... is it a simple cable connection?

Good question.
I don't know if it can or not, and ultimately it would depend on a few things:

Is the receiver inside the antenna or inside teh headunit?
If it's inside the headunit, then you'd have to open the headunit to get at the receiver, voiding your warranty.
If it's in the antenna, then maybe.

What protocol does the receiver output?
If it outputs garmin-speak or NMEA, then you could possibly hack it for PC use. If it uses a proprietary protocol, you're S.O.L.

Either way, doing this would void your warranty on the AVIC unit, I'm certain. Are you willing to risk it? I wouldn't.

I think you would save yourself alot of trouble by getting the $60 GPS USB device.

You know, an RV would be a great place to have multiple computers running. Just a thought.

Someone once used a GPS receiver on a laptop and then re-transmitted the GPS signal from that laptop via Bluetooth to another device (a PDA if I recall correctly). Franson GPS Gate software was used to achieve that. I'm sure if you go to Franson GPS Gate site and/or forum you will get the answer how to do this.

The actual GPS reciever is inside the AVIC's brain unit. All you have on the outside of that is an antenna. This antenna is NOT going to work with your PC.

You need a seperate GPS unit for your computer.
