Question about finding a "Non-Graphical" GPS solution

Hello everyone,

Well it has been about a year since I last attempted to incorporate a PC system into my car and made any posts.

I have decided to look into another attempt, however the thing I am curious about is incorporating a "non-graphical" GPS. I know alot of people may be wondering if I have taken to eating lead based paint so let me try to explain what I am refering to.

What I am looking to accomplish is to have a simple Text LCD module display Information such as: Destination & total distance to travel , Next Stop/turn distance and name. And have this update as I drive.

does anyone know of a software solution to this or I am seeking something that Is not going to be availbale.

Not a totally crazy idea. I've seen cars with such a display in to accompany the graphic one (stock though). If you have programming skills and can access the API of a regular GPS package, then I don't see why you couldn't output to an LCD module. I assume you would also need some sort of driver module plugged into a serial port. Sure I've read about these somewhere.

Not sure how useful this reply is really since there are no real answers or links. Perhaps I need to stop chewing pencils also.

Yes it can be done. I started putting together a program like this using the MapPoint API along with the GPSTools SDK, which gives you access to the gps data.

I could display lat/long, speed and heading, the street you're on, routing, poi's, etc. as text output.

Thanks for the info ... I will look into if I am going to have the ability to incorporate this into my project.
