Agreed about the try-out thing. I didn't find a trial version and I checked at BestBuy and CompUSA - the bundles are treated as software and can't be returned once opened even though they include hardware. I couldn't even find a screen shot at 640x480 so I took a risk. The software alone is only $30 though so it's not that bad... unless the receivers are incompatible.
I found the PDA version to be difficult to load maps - I tried loading maps for a cross-country trip the night before leaving, and it kept saying something like "too much data, pick smaller area". I gave up when I was down to some county somewhere in the middle of the country - looked like it would take longer to figure out how to transfer the maps than to actually make the trip!
So there's an option to get rid of the left pane in GPS-tracking mode; I'd just missed it. It's a checkbox on the lower left list of the GPS Options window. It's like "Auto-display GPS Overview."
